How It Works

How WellTeenMD Works

Comprehensive care. One coordinated program. WellTeenMD brings physician care, personalized nutrition, weight-management medication when appropriate, and ongoing monitoring together in one program designed for teens and young adults.

There is no fixed timeline and no one-size-fits-all treatment plan. Your care continues for as long as it is helpful, with physician follow-up based on your individual needs.

Meet With Your Physician

Every patient begins with a comprehensive evaluation by one of our board-certified pediatric gastroenterologists. We’ll review medical and family history, growth and weight history, previous weight-management efforts, nutrition and lifestyle, current medications, and any weight-related health concerns.

When appropriate, we’ll also evaluate for conditions associated with excess weight, including insulin resistance, abnormal cholesterol, high blood pressure, and fatty liver disease, and discuss whether weight-management medication should be considered.

Build Your Personalized Plan

There is no single approach that works for every patient. Your physician develops an individualized plan based on age, medical history, nutritional needs, overall health, and goals. Your plan may include nutritional changes, lifestyle recommendations, treatment of related health concerns, and GLP-1 or other weight-management medication when medically appropriate.

Work With Your Registered Dietitian or Nutritionist

Every WellTeenMD enrollment includes five individual visits with a nutritionist or registered dietitian. Nutrition counseling is personalized to each patient’s needs, preferences, lifestyle, and treatment plan, not a restrictive, one-size-fits-all diet. For patients taking GLP-1 medication, nutrition support becomes especially important as appetite and food intake decrease.

After the five included visits, additional dietitian sessions are available at a discounted WellTeenMD rate for patients who would like continued support.

Add Medication When Appropriate

For patients who are appropriate candidates, your physician may recommend a GLP-1 or another weight-management medication. Before treatment begins, we’ll discuss potential benefits, risks, side effects, alternatives, and what to expect.

If medication is prescribed, your physician remains involved, monitoring response, adjusting dosing when appropriate, helping manage side effects, and following overall health throughout treatment. Learn about GLP-1 medications →

Continue Care for as Long as You Need It

There is no predetermined number of physician visits and no time limit on participation in WellTeenMD. Some patients need more frequent follow-up while starting or adjusting medication; others need less once treatment is established. Care may include monitoring weight and BMI, medication response, side effects, nutrition, laboratory results, and weight-related health conditions.

Physician visits are billed through health insurance, subject to your individual plan’s coverage, copays, deductibles, and other benefits.

On your timeline

No fixed timeline. No one-size-fits-all plan.

Meaningful weight management doesn’t happen according to a predetermined schedule. Some patients reach their goals relatively quickly; others benefit from longer-term treatment and support. We don’t require patients to complete treatment within a set number of months. As your health, goals, and needs change, your treatment plan can change with you.
